“Very often we are unaware of what causes our stress as we all have different drivers. Different things stress different people and it is therefore essential for leaders to understand which situations and/or relationships trigger their stress buttons and how they can respond effectively,” said Margaret Rose, Partner at Fluid Moves and Lead Coach for Fluid Moves’ ManagingStress Programme. “For example, we may feel the need to please people, to be a perfectionist, or we may have a great fear of failure and this will have a huge effect on what pushes our buttons and how we respond.”

Results of a survey carried out by the Centre for Creative Leadership (CCL) suggests that 88% of leaders said that having a leadership role increases the level of stress.  They cited work is a primary source of stress, a lack of resources and time as being the most stressful leadership demands experienced by leaders. The majority of respondents cited physical exercise helps them to manage their stress and almost 90% say they temporarily remove themselves (physically or mentally) from the source. What is interesting is that 80% of respondent’s stated that they would benefit from a coach to help them manage their stress.

How We Help

Stress is what you experience when you believe you can’t cope effectively with a threatening situation. Stress responses can take on different forms - physical, emotional and behavioural, and a coach can be instrumental in assisting leaders to recognise the sources of stress, the triggers and current habits and coping strategies being used.  Strategies that do not work well may need to be changed to more effective ones such as distracting our thoughts, being more mindful, self talk and relaxation.
